Panic Attacks and Agoraphobia

Sudden waves of intense fear that can lead to avoidance and feeling trapped.

What This Can Look Like

Panic attacks often peak quickly and can feel terrifying. Common symptoms include:

  • Racing heart, sweating, shaking
  • Shortness of breath or choking sensations
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Fear of dying or “going crazy”

How Anxiety Maintains the Cycle

Avoidance can reduce fear short-term, but it teaches the brain that panic is dangerous and must be prevented at all costs. This often increases anxiety about having another panic attack and expands the list of avoided situations.

How CBT and Exposure Therapy Help

CBT for panic focuses on changing the fear of physical sensations and the meaning you assign to them. Exposure helps you practice:

  • Internal sensations (interoceptive exposure)
  • Feared places and situations (situational exposure)
  • New responses that build confidence over time
